Cameron Highlands Crowned Asia’s Top Rural Destination, Overtaking Places in Japan, Thailand & More

Digital travel platform Agoda recently announced its list of top rural destinations in Asia, and the destination which took first place is somewhere Malaysians are definitely familiar with: Cameron Highlands!

In a press release, Agoda said that rural destinations, particularly those nestled in mountains and hillsides, are gaining popularity among travellers seeking to immerse themselves in local culture and natural beauty.

Cameron Highlands has been named the top rural destination in Asia

For Cameron Highlands, Agoda said that the destination is renowned for its cool climate and stunning tea plantations.

Moreover, at the popular Pahang destination, travellers can explore lush green landscapes, visit vibrant flower gardens and enjoy fresh produce from local farms.

“The highlands offer a peaceful retreat with opportunities for hiking and exploring charming villages,” the press release said.

The rankings are based on the digital travel platform’s data across 8 markets in Asia with a population under 50,000 based on accommodation searches made between 15 February to 15 August 2025.

Here are the top 8 rural destinations in Asia according to Agoda:

  1. Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
  2. Khao Yai, Thailand
  3. Puncak, Indonesia
  4. Fujikawaguchiko, Japan
  5. Kenting, Taiwan
  6. Sapa, Vietnam
  7. Munnar, India
  8. PyeongChang-gun, South Korea
