A total of 16 express and sightseeing bus passengers received summons of RM300 each for not wearing their seatbelts, in a special operation by the Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) on Tuesday (July 1) evening.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Kedah JPJ Director, Stien Van Lutam, said that the enforcement operation was carried out to ensure that bus drivers and passengers comply with the regulation of wearing seatbelts.

He explained that a total of 18 buses were inspected in the operation, including 14 express buses and 4 sightseeing buses.
“Two underaged passengers who committed the offence were given advice and advocacy, while 16 other passengers were issues compounds of RM300 each.”
Stien Van Lutam added that JPJ also utilised the strategy of placing undercover officers on buses to quietly detect offences before issuing compounds.
“Our enforcement is not just limited to roadblocks or inspections at terminals, but also through undercover operations on buses. If there are passengers or drivers not wearing seatbelts, we will take action based on evidence recorded,” he further explained.
The action taken was in accordance with the Motor Vehicles (Seatbelts and Child Restraint Systems) Rules 1978 Amendment 2008.
