Passing through Ipoh via the North-South highway has always been a wonderful sight but you would notice that the view is just not the same anymore.
Recently, a series of photos depicting the Ipoh mountains has gone viral with more than 2,000 shares on Facebook. In the photos, we can see that the high, lush and green mountains have become shorter and balder.
Many Malaysians have expressed their disappointment after seeing those pictures.
“This is only in Ipoh. If you go around the whole Perak. You can see everything destroyed. Looking at the hills and mountains here pains me. It’s not like back then.”
“It really pains me to see the destruction of nature in Ipoh. I was one of the lucky ones who managed to feel and see Ipoh’s natural beauty that is getting extinct in the name of development. All this beauty and splendour only remain in my memories,” said a user.
Other netizens mentioned that Perak is the main place of production for construction materials.
“It’s hard to say but it’s the truth. Perak has been supplying construction materials to the whole semenanjung for decades.”
Another said that a balance is needed, “This is true. On opposing ends, there is a need for conservation but also utilisation for economic demand. A Geopark concept will not obstruct the extraction of earth sources but it must be through sustainable quarrying.”
“If it is a source of heritage that needs to be preserved then there is not supposed to be destruction. There needs to be a win-win situation.”
Just like what one of the netizens said, the beautiful mountains of Ipoh now only remain in our memories. We hope that the local government will consider sustainability in their planning.
