The organiser of a birthday celebration was arrested for being involved in an arson incident using fireworks that led to a fire at an open-air hall, Arena Square Teluk Intan, in Jalan Raja, Perak.
In the incident, which took place at 11:38pm on Sunday (November 3), the roof of the hall, which belongs to the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI), was destroyed by the fire before firefighters could extinguish it.
According to a report by Harian Metro, Hilir Perak District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri shared that the organiser of the birthday celebration, a 24-year-old man, was arrested at his home in Teluk Intan yesterday (November 4) at 3pm.
“The preliminary investigation with the fire forensics team found that the fire may have been caused by fireworks that were shot towards the roof of the hall. The organiser rented the hall from MPTI and provided various types of firecrackers and fireworks for the use of 500 guests,”
“However, the investigation found that the organiser did not have a valid license for the use of the fireworks and firecrackers,” he said.
This case will be investigated according to Section 436 of the Penal Code, which is treason with fire, and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, for possessing and playing with firecrackers or fireworks without a license.
The birthday celebration organiser, who is a lorry driver, will be brought to the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court to obtain a remand order to assist with the investigation.
Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri also urges the public that the use of firecrackers and fireworks without a license is an offence as it can pose a safety risk.
