After 6 long years of suffering and uncertainty, Sam Ke Ting was finally freed of all charges related to an accident that led to the deaths of 8 teenagers who were riding ‘basikal lajak’ on a highway at 3am.
Considering the pain that many parties endured during this time, you would think that we’d start seeing less ‘basikal lajaks’ on the road, especially considering the fact that they don’t have brakes. Guess not.
Alwyn Lau took to his Twitter account to showcase a group of ‘basikal lajak’ kids riding in the middle of the road in Taipan, Subang Jaya, among heavy traffic.
He wrote, “I snapped this yesterday (April 10, Monday). I swear our bike-crazy kids aren’t learning a damn thing from this (Sam Ke Ting) case”.
The photo showcased 5 kids riding ‘basikal lajak’ and normal bikes in between cars on the road.
While many shared their disappointment that these kids are still allowed to endanger themselves and other road users by taking to the streets, others pointed out the bigger picture of the lack of bike lanes and cycling infrastructure.
But this also begs the question, would having proper bike lanes stop these kids from endangering themselves and others?
After all, they, often times, would race these bikes that do not have brakes.
So, what do you think? Would designated bicycle lanes prevent ‘basikal lajak’ kids from getting into accidents?
Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
