The nation was shocked yesterday by a viral video that shows a lecturer from UiTM insulting B40 students during an online lecture.
Netizens have since expressed their anger towards the incident and some even offered to get the unfortunate student a laptop. However, according to an official chronology report by UiTM following the meeting between all parties, it seems that the student had not been entirely honest.
Other students who were interviewed yesterday (30 March) confirmed that the incident took place last semester in October 2021 on the 8th week of the subject Construction Economic & Islamic Finance.
He owns a laptop indeed
As for the student who was insulted, he confessed that his mother is still alive and currently working as a factory operator, as opposed to his statement “mak dah takde” (mum is not alive). His father is currently unemployed and he has 2 other siblings who are working and studying in another institute, respectively.
The student also revealed that he did not bring his laptop to campus during the online lecture and subsequently used his phone instead. Besides that, he was also not responsible for the video that has gone viral as it was recorded & uploaded by someone else.
Peaceful settlement or termination?
After getting a clearer picture of the whole incident, the management of UiTM may opt to take 1 of the following decisions.
- Not taking action against anyone & harmonise the situation among everyone involved.
- Terminating the contract of the lecturer which was renewed on 15 March 2022.
However, they are still awaiting suggestions from the Ministry of Higher Education on the next steps.
Now that things have become clearer, do you think the parties should resolve the matter amicably, or the lecturer should have her contract terminated?
