A local university professor is receiving backlash after making comments about a student and the B40 community during an online class.

In a 1 minute 45 second video that has since been taken down from social media, the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) lecturer had told a student that she “cannot sit with B40 people (students)” as they have other things to worry about besides their education, or in her words, “they think about other things besides their education“.

These all come after the student had informed her that he was using his phone for the online class as he did not have a laptop or computer.

Based on a report by Berita Harian, UiTM has since shared that they will take the appropriate action against the contract lecturer for insulting the B40 student.

UiTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Roziah Mohd Janor shared that they are currently investigating the matter and are looking into taking action against the lecturer.

“She is a contract lecturer at the UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak branch, and teaches at the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU). I understand that the incident happened last semester, but it had only gone viral yesterday. This issue must have a plan as to why it was only uploaded yesterday,”

“However, action will be taken and for the student, we have tracked him down and have provided him with the necessary equipment (laptop),” she shared, adding that the lecturer is a good professor but it was her mistake to scold the student.

Stay tuned for more updates.
