Jailed former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is never far away from making headlines despite being in prison.
Most recently, the ex-Pekan Member of Parliament (MP) was in the news for initiating a judicial review of an alleged addendum order allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest.
Anwar proposed that house arrest for Najib should be considered after the 1MDB trial is over
Now, even current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has voiced his opinion on the matter, proposing that house arrest for Najib should be considered after the latter has finished his ongoing trial on the infamous 1MDB case.
As reported by Sinar Harian, Anwar was quoted as giving the proposal during an interview with Bloomberg at the Qatar Economic Forum (QEF) 2024 in Doha, Qatar yesterday (14 May).
The Prime Minister elaborated that he is of the opinion that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong should consider house arrest for Najib after the 1MDB trial is over.
Anwar asserted,
“If the King sought my advice, I will say, ‘Tuanku, go through that process’.”
“At the end of the day, the King would be making the decision. As the Prime Minister, I won’t be overstepping the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,”
The Prime Minister added that all parties should focus on the ongoing 1MDB trial and not the issue of house arrest for Najib.
The former Prime Minister is currently undergoing a 6-year prison sentence in Kajang prison for the infamous SRC International trial.
The sentence was initially set for 12 years and a fine of RM210 million but Najib received a partial Royal Pardon which halved the imprisonment and reduced the fine to RM50 million.
