The moment we see the nibble-sized snacks and cookies, we ultimately know that Raya is just around the corner. We often serve these mouth-watering delicacies to guests but at the end of the day, it ends up in our tummies.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic has driven us apart from our families and prevented us from celebrating the festive season at home, let’s cure that homesick feeling with a reminiscent recall of our eight favourite Raya goodies. Some of these ‘kuih’ have remained popular, while others have faded with time. This raya you can get these yummy goods at the tip of your fingers.

1. Pineapple Tarts
This buttery, crumbly and melt-in-your-mouth pastry with pineapple filling never misses its appearance. This traditional delicacy is a popular one for Malaysians and is usually seen during many festive seasons such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali.

2. Kuih Dahlia Cherry Butter Cookies( Kuih Semperit/Semprit)
Semperit is sort of a Malay version of butter cookies. These cookies are made in a flower-shaped swirl, topped with a piece of glazed cherry then baked to perfection. Its sweet custard taste that just crumbles in your mouth is perfect with a cup of coffee or tea.

3. Kuih Makmur
Kuih makmur is about the easiest kuih to make, yet the most delicate of all. It is also the easiest to identify as its only form is a coated white ball, looking quite like a snowball. Makmur is made up of only three simple ingredients, butter, ghee and flour.

Whoever knew cornflakes and honey would work so well together! It’s become a popular treat among Malaysians because it’s easy to make, or that the process of making can involve children. It’s always nice to have a couple of extra pair of hands to help around during the festive seasons. The merrier the better!

6. Rempeyek Kacang/ Peyek (Crispy Peanut Fritters)
Rempeyek is traditionally an Indonesian-Javanese snack. However, due to the migration of the Javanese in the 19th century, it gradually became part of our tradition. Made of rice flour, spices, peanuts, anchovies, and sometimes even shrimp, Rempeyek stays crispy for a long time. Thus, making it even more irresistible.

It’s quite an appetite stealer when food is named after an insect. These biscuits are given the name sarang semut because of their look, shape and intention of chocolate sprinkles making them look like ants’ nest.

8. Beehive Cookies (Kuih Rose/ Kuih Loyang)
