Created by a candidate running for a seat in Kelantan, the White Flag movement which exploded last year was an amazing symbol of what Malaysians can do when we are united and working together for all for a cause.
The movement which occurred between June and July of 2021, helped to provide those in need with an avenue to call for help, much of whom had been severely affected by the various lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Recently, a Malaysian took to Twitter to share her experience of helping those in need during that time while urging others to share their perspective on how they had helped others or asked for help.
The post which was written by Niresh said,
“What was your experience during the white flag movement? Perhaps your story could serve as a reminder to steer the ship a little.”
“I’ll start. During MCO, a woman approached me in Speedmart while I was picking between ice cream flavours to ask me if I could buy her rice. RICE! Obviously, I obliged and got her whatever she needed.”
“Then I found out that she had a 3-month-old baby at home whom she could not breastfeed because she lacked the nutrition. Guess what was she feeding the little one? – Air sirap,” she added.
Concluding her post, Niresh wrote that as this was during Muhyiddin’s (PN) tenure. This should serve as a reminder as well as guide for who or who not to vote for.
“I didn’t mean to make this political but I felt the need to. If you think PN is the lesser evil, think again. Never forget the white flag movement.”
A heartbreaking time
Niresh’s post has garnered plenty of Malaysians as they took to the comments section to share their experiences.
“I saw a family rummaging through rubbish bins. I stopped the kids but the eldest pleaded to allow them to salve what they could. They lost both their parents to Covid apparently.”
“My husband (found) out that our neighbour’s daughters have been using kain as their sanitary pad“, commented a netizen.
A user commented, “The amount of people who were struggling to afford basics was heartbreaking. The government failed us when we needed them the most“.
Another netizen said, “My father decided to give our community free 5kg rice several times. There were those that came from far just by walking for the sake of feeding their families“.
