The Communications Ministry made several important announcements during a press conference yesterday, some of which revolve around the 5G network in Malaysia.
In the press conference, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that our country has reached its target of having 80% coverage of the 5G network in Malaysia’s populated areas by the end of 2023.

Specifically, Fahmi revealed that as of 31 December 2023, our 5G network coverage was at 80.2% of populated areas in Malaysia.
Accordingly, given that the target has been achieved, the Communications Minister announced that Malaysia will now shift to a dual 5G network model as previously promised by the federal government instead of the current Single Wholesale Network through Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).
In the press conference, Fahmi said that a second 5G network will be announced soon, with the Special Task Force on 5G meeting this Friday (12 Jan) to decide on the road map and direction moving forward.
The decision made by the task force will then be forwarded to Cabinet. Previously, it was alluded to that the second 5G network will allow for other tech companies, even foreign ones such as HUAWEI to have a stake, thus improving the competitiveness of the 5G network in Malaysia.
As for when the second 5G network will be implemented, Fahmi assured that the government will not take long to consider and make an announcement on the matter. However, the dual 5G network model can only be implemented if the terms agreed by the Task Force are achieved.
