Flares are all fun and game until someone gets seriously injured. So, why would anyone light up flares so closely to other people, where injuries can easily be caused?

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) shared via their Facebook page that they have issued the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) Football Club fines totaling in RM120,000 due to their supporters lighting up flares in the stands during a Super League match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Johor.

Flares 1

Here is the breakdown of their fines:

Super League match JDT vs Sabah FC (Friday, March 31, 2023)

  • JDT was fined RM30,000 due to their supporters burning an estimated 10 flares.
  • JDT was fined RM10,000 for failing to comply with organising obligations by allowed the entry and burning of flares by their supporters.

Super League match JDT vs Kedah Darul Aman FC (Sunday, April 9, 2023)

  • JDT was fined RM30,000 due to their supporters burning an estimated 30 flares.
  • JDT was fined RM10,000 for failing to comply with organising obligations by allowed the entry and burning of flares by their supporters.

FA Cup match JDT vs PDRM FC (Friday, April 14, 2023)

  • JDT was fined RM30,000 due to their supporters burning an estimated 29 flares.
  • JDT was fined RM10,000 for failing to comply with organising obligations by allowed the entry and burning of flares by their supporters.

According to a report by Berita RTM, the general public has since insisted on harsher punishments to be imposed due to the repeated offenses as more flares were allegedly lit up during a match merely 48 hours after FAM had announced the above mentioned fines on Thursday (July 6).

Flares 2

While some have suggested that points be deducted from JDT’s scores, other believe that matches should be played without the presence of spectators.

They added that the action of lighting flares should be seen as a sign of disrespect to the Malaysian Football League (MFL) as the governing body of the M-League and a challenge to FAM as the government body of national football.
