Two children, aged six and eight, tragically died after the car they were in slipped into a river in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, yesterday (September 4).
Port Dickson District Police Chief, Superintendent Maslan Udin, said the incident happened while a couple and the two children were relaxing in the area.

“Those inside the car were screaming for help”
According to Sinar Harian, the male adult said he had stepped out of the car to smoke while the woman, believed to be the mother, and the kids stayed inside.
At the time of the incident, the car was parked near the riverbank by Jambatan Tanjung Agas, Teluk Kemang, with the engine off, when it suddenly rolled into the water, dragging the woman and children with it.
“The car suddenly slid toward the river. The water was low at the time, and those inside were screaming for help,” said Maslan Udin.
He added that nearby members of the public quickly jumped in to help and managed to rescue the woman, but the two children were swept up in the car.

The two children were later pronounced dead
According to Maslan, initial investigations suggested that the couple and kids had likely been in the area for a couple of days to rest and go fishing.
“The rescue team managed to recover the girl at around 1:30 PM, while her younger sibling was found about 20 minutes later. Both were pronounced dead by medical personnel after CPR attempts failed,” he said.
He added that the car had been parked about 10 metres from the riverbank with the engine off and was believed to have experienced a technical problem.
“The vehicle was found upside down at the bottom of the river, with both victims still inside.”
The car was reportedly stolen, and the police arrested the couple for suspicious statements
The case took another turn when Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad confirmed that the 46-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were detained after giving suspicious statements about the incident.

In another by Sinar Harian, checks showed the man has 16 prior criminal records, including four outstanding cases, while the woman has none.
“Both tested negative for drugs, but further checks revealed the car they used had been reported stolen in Nusa Bestari, Johor, back in 2022,” he said.
He added that the couple will be taken to the Seremban Court for a remand order, with the case now being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
