International Women’s Day is around the corner and we’re giving a shout out to all you amazing, strong women out there! Women show their strength in their own unique ways. Here are just some of the few ways women show their incredible strength and grace.
1. When you love and support other women
Society has somehow taught us that women are always in competition with one another. Strong women believe in the capabilities of other women. They celebrate the success of other women because when one woman succeeds, it’s a victory for all women.
Zoe Saldana, who stars in a 2016 biographical film, Nina, expresses her belief in other women perfectly here.
Be sure to catch Zoe Saldana’s amazing performance in Nina, available exclusively on On Demand to see her tribute to an incredible woman. You can’t find this amazing movie in the cinemas!
2. When you’re confident and know what you’re worth
Sadly, lots of women, especially Asian women, are indirectly taught from a young age to shrink themselves so as to not come off as “show-offs”, or to seem more superior than men. Because men are the ones who take care of everything right? *Rolls eyes*
Strong, confident women realise that they should not settle for anyone who makes them feel like they should dumb themselves down and are proud of their intelligence and strength.
Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) from Scandal is a great inspiration to all women out there as she makes sure to get things done!
3. When you’re comfortable being on your own
Strong women realise that they don’t necessarily need a partner by their side. Unlike what old media used to portray, women aren’t frail and weak. No longer damsels in distress, they can be independent and comfortable in their own skin, conquering the world on their own.
Take Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence) from Passengers for example. She’s a woman successful in her career and exudes confidence through her sense of humour. She takes challenges head-on and makes the best of her situation using her most prized skill — writing! You go, girl!
4. When you’re not afraid to go to great lengths for the people you care about
Strong women don’t shut others out. They would go through the ends of the earth for people they care for the most. They show all their love and support no matter what the circumstances are. For them, love is a source of strength, be it towards family, lovers, friends or colleagues.
Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) from Empire cares deeply about her family and shows a lot of tough love to knock sense into her children whenever needed. Now if that isn’t love, we don’t know what is!
Let’s not forget how she put everyone in line either! No one be messin’ with this mama Cookies!
5. When you take people’s advice to heart
In life, sometimes, we don’t always have it figured out. The same goes for strong, independent women, who sometimes need to seek the advice of wiser people to help them come to a conclusion.
It isn’t weakness to know when you need help and actively ask for advice. That’s what Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) from Queen of Katwe learned when she received this insightful piece of advice from her chess teacher about confidence.
6. When you’re honest with yourself
Strong women realise that it’s okay to be vulnerable and acknowledge the qualities about themselves that they dislike and make an effort to improve themselves. After all, nobody’s perfect!
Shin Saimdang (portrayed by Lee Young-ae) for instance, was an iconic artist, calligraphist, writer and poet from Korea. As a woman of many talents, she is a prime example of how important it is to consistently improve yourself.
Her strides in breaking the norms of what a woman should be like at that time and her contributions to the arts in Korea made her a highly respected woman many admire to this day. Her face is even on the 50,000 Won banknote!
Do you possess some of these strong qualities that we’ve mentioned? Or perhaps, you’d love to know more about the stories of these strong women?
