A 36-year-old woman attempted suicide by jumping off the Penang bridge yesterday (2 August). This incident occurred around 5pm when she drove to the bridge and climbed over the guardrails, according to Guang Ming Daily. She then jumped into the sea.
Since it was rush hour on the road, many people witnessed the incident and called for rescue. The marine police, fire department, as well as fishermen, were notified, and they immediately set out to search for the lady.
It was reported that the location that she took the leap was around 6.8km off Butterworth.
Fortunately, the rescue team managed to find her four hours after she jumped off. At 9pm, she was rescued and rushed to the hospital in Penang. The lady was identified to have come from Permatang Pauh, Penang.
We’re glad that the capable rescue team saved her, but we also hope that she’ll get the help she needs for her emotional and mental state.
You may wonder how it’s possible for one to just climb over the guardrails. Based on this video taken at the scene, the guardrails are pretty low and accessible.
