A 35-year-old man became paralysed because he sat in front of his computer for long hours every day.
According to China Press, Liu from China, who works in an online shopping company, spent years sitting in front of the computer every day as his job requires him to process orders. This went on until he developed cervical spinal stenosis, which happens when the neck’s protective spinal canal narrows due to degenerative changes or trauma.
He went to a private massage centre to help with the pain, however, he did not expect that when he left for work the next day, he had to be sent to the hospital instead.
Medical reports revealed that Liu’s cervical problem had accumulated over many years as he often had to look down when he was working, causing unnecessary strain in his neck.
As a matter of fact, one year ago, Liu had been hospitalised to get medical treatment for discomfort in his neck and upper body area. MRI scans showed that the parts between several of his cervical discs were in very bad condition and needed surgery.
However, because his family was conservative and traditional, they opted for massages and acupuncture to treat Liu instead.
On 30th September 2019, Liu had gone for a massage, but immediately after that, he felt very weak and found it hard to move. But because he didn’t want to worry his family, he just lay on the floor and rested.
The next day, Liu’s condition became worse, and he found that he could not move his lower limbs. He asked his family to bring him to the hospital where they did a CT scan on him.
The results showed that Liu had cervical spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck. Liu’s spinal canal had narrowed abnormally and was squeezing his nerve roots, which caused the weakness in his lower limbs.
The doctor who treated him said that this condition is more commonly found in elderly patients or patients with severe injuries, but rarely in younger patients. Liu was then required to undergo an emergency surgery.
Unfortunately, even after the operation, Liu still could not move his lower limbs and the doctors told him that he might not be able to use his legs for life.
OMG! There are so many jobs that require employees to sit in front of the computer for long hours, but it’s actually really bad for your back! So, remember to walk around often and not stay in the same spot for prolonged hours. Stay active, guys!
