A woman facing a five-year prison sentence has finally been brought to justice for a fraud case that occurred in December 2020 in Shanxi province in Central China.
According to the South China Morning Post, she repeatedly got pregnant on purpose to avoid serving time in jail.

Reports say that in China, prisoners who are seriously ill, pregnant, breastfeeding, or unable to care for themselves can temporarily serve their sentences outside of prison.
Instead, they undergo community correction either at home or in hospitals, under the watch of local correctional authorities.
Taking advantage of this, the woman deliberately got pregnant and gave birth to three children with the same man in four years.
Her scheme was exposed in May when a prosecutor found out that, after her third delivery, she wasn’t actually living with the baby.

Investigations revealed that the child was officially registered under her sister-in-law’s household, which legally made the child her sister-in-law’s.
After being shown evidence, the woman admitted she was divorced, with two of her kids living with her ex-husband, while the third was given to his sister to care for.
Prosecutors later recommended that she be incarcerated, and since she had less than a year left on her sentence, she was sent back to a detention centre to serve the remaining prison term.
Because she wasn’t the only woman who tried to avoid prison by getting pregnant, some prosecutors suggested that the legal system consider delaying sentences in such cases to protect the rights of unborn children.
