It’s no secret that once the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) was eased to conditional, many Malaysians took the opportunity to head out to bars to enjoy their favourite alcoholic drinks.

But soon after, the government had decided that pubs, bars and clubs cannot operate during the CMCO. Well, it looks like some of them didn’t get the memo.

As according to The Star, 29 people including three women and a bartender was arrested in a bar in Ipoh for defying the CMCO.

Authorities said that the police had arrived at the premises located at Jalan Lau Ek Ching and found that the door was locked from within.

“We knocked on the door several times and was greeted by the bartender. We identified ourselves and proceeded to check the premises,” he said. Apparently, the customers were found enjoying themselves while having alcoholic drinks.

“All were unable to give reasonable explanations other than having alcohol at the premises. Those arrested also claimed not to know that pubs were not allowed to operate and that any gathering there are prohibited,” he added.

The men have since been placed at the central police station lock-up while the three women have been sent to the Pekan Baru station lock-up.

This matter is now being investigated under Rule 15 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2020 and also Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act that could spread an infectious disease.

It’s understandable to crave a cold beer every once in a while, but there’s also nothing wrong with drinking alcohol from the safety of your own home.
