Food trends come and go but have you ever realised that all the food that is “trendy” tend to be those high in fat and sugar? Let’s take boba as an example, as it has been reported that there is actually no nutritional value in the drink and the pearls!
According to Harian Metro, this woman had to find out the hard way after chasing viral food trends. She says,
“I thought that I was still young so I didn’t think that I would get any sickness. But I got diabetes and high blood pressure at the age of 19, which made my vision bad.”
Sidah, the now 27-year-old woman, expressed her regret on following viral food trends, saying,
“I regret not taking care of my health when I was younger and just trying any viral food items. Most of those foods do not actually have nutritional value but are just high in sugar and carbs.”
She only started her follow-up treatment in July after having problems with her vision to the point that she was not able to ride her motorbike to work. So, she had to give up her job as a seamstress and is now dependent on her mother and her younger brother, who works in a supermarket.
Before this, she went for follow-up treatments only for a year, and stopped going and taking medications as she was too busy. When the problems with her vision started to get serious, she went straight to the hospital, and they told her that it originated from her diabetes.
That moment onward, she started eating healthier and really cut down on her carb, fats and sugar intake. Sidah also mentioned that her mother has health issues such as asthma and heart attacks as well, so she used to be the one taking her mother to the hospital from check-ups. But now, she has to call her uncle if there are any emergencies.
Sidah’s father passed away back in 2012 due to an infection and ever since then, she and her brother have been working to support the family. But as she is now unfit to work, her brother is the only one working now. They receive RM200 each month from the welfare department but it is still not enough.
Sidah’s mother has expressed her worries,
“The only thing that I wish for right now is for her vision to return. I worry about her future.”
