A Malaysian is now reminding people against sitting in their cars while stopped by the side of highways, just in case an accident happens.

According to a report by Malaysia Gazette, 36-year-old Tan Hong Ta shared how he could have died should he have remained inside his luxury car by the side of the PLUS Highway northbound near Ayer Keroh, while waiting for a tow truck after his BMW Z4 had sustained a flat tyre.

Fire 2

“Fortunately, when the car’s tyre went flat, I chose to wait by the side of the highway under the scorching sun. Otherwise, I would have died.”

This is because his BMW Z4 ended up being completely burnt along with a tanker truck that was involved in an accident there.

The incident took place at about 2:40pm yesterday (January 8).

His luxury vehicle had sustained a flat tyre while he was on his way to Kuala Lumpur and Tan decided to wait by the side of the highway, rather than in his car, for a tow truck.

Fire 1

“After getting out of the car, I called a tow truck and waited by the side of the highway for almost 2 hours because I was aware of the danger of being in the car if it was hit by another vehicle,”

“Unexpectedly, my hunch was right and as soon as the tow truck arrived, a trailer suddenly crashed into a cooking oil tanker truck, causing it to catch fire right next to my car. Without thinking twice, I proceeded to run for about 100 metres along the side of the highway as I heard several explosions from the tanker,” he said.

Despite losing his luxury car (and everything inside) to the fire, he is thankful that he made the right choice by waiting outside his car, rather than in the car.
