This is such a heartbreaking story!
You never want to hear the word “cancer” associated with yourself or anyone you love, and for Fatin Nursyahirah Yusuf, she was shocked when she found out that she had stage 3 sarcoma back in 2017.
However, the then 23-year-old put on a brave face and underwent treatment for her cancer as her family was coming to terms with the news. She managed to live on for about a year and but sadly, she passed away less than 24 hours after she married her fiance, Azzam, on Friday morning (August 3).
Her sad story was shared online by her elder brother, Shukur Yusuf and went viral on Facebook. The wedding went smoothly but Fatin was admitted to the hospital after Friday prayers when her condition deteriorated. She was accompanied by her family as they sat by her side when she passed away on Saturday morning.
Shukur documented Fatin, or more affectionately known as Kakak’s (big sister), journey on Facebook. Initially, the family was hopeful when she went for her first surgery in September 2017 and the doctor said they had gotten rid of the cancer cells. Unfortunately, just a few months later in December, the cancer came back and was even more aggressive than before.
This time, the surgery wasn’t as successful but Fatin was still smiling and bravely went for her radiotherapy sessions without any complaints. Yet, this wasn’t enough to stop the cancer as it had spread to other organs.
“When we heard this, we were stunned! That was the first time I saw Kakak break down in tears. I was crying as well even though I tried to console her,” the grieving brother wrote.
However, in June, a young man courted Fatin even though he knew that she was suffering from stage four cancer and they got engaged. The couple enjoyed their time together as much as they could but in July, her condition worsened as the cancer had attacked her lungs and the doctors told the family that they could only ensure that she was as comfortable as possible.
“Azzam told us that he wanted to marry Kakak and he said that he did not mind her cancer. His family supported his decision as they had already accepted Kakak as part of the family,” he continued. The short and simple wedding ceremony was very touching and Shukur said that everyone was moved to tears.
“We were very moved by Azzam and his family’s sincerity who accepted an ailing person to be part of their lives. After the solemnisation ceremony, we felt grateful and relieved that they were able to be united as husband and wife, even if it would just be for a short while,” he said.
Shukur said that he accepted Fatin’s death as part of God’s plan and was grateful to Azzam and his family for their love and care towards his sister.
“God loves her more and she left us at dawn on Saturday with Mama, Abah (father), her husband, Mak Besah, and myself by her side,” Shukur wrote.
RIP, Fatin. Our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
