A 62-year-old disabled man and his wife have been picking up food from supermarket trash bins in Terengganu just to get by and feed their family.
Jani Yusof said the food they collect isn’t leftovers but still-packaged items that supermarkets throw out after expiring.
“I can’t bring myself to give my kids spoiled food”
The man said the food they pick up like onions, biscuits, tea, coffee, and milk, is still good and helps keep his family of 5 from going hungry, as reported by Sinar Harian.
He added that while most of the food is expired, it’s still edible and unopened.
“I don’t take actual food waste from the trash. I can’t bring myself to give my kids spoiled food because I know it’s bad for their health.”
He and his 43-year-old wife ride a three-wheeled motorcycle every day to collect recyclables and search for discarded items to sell.

“Our health prevents us from doing regular jobs”
Even though they try to make ends meet, they earn less than RM200 a month, which isn’t enough to support their family, especially since his wife can’t work due to high blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma.
Right now, Jani gets RM4,000 a year from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) and RM450 a month from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
“But it’s still not enough, especially with school expenses for our two sons, ages 8 and 7, and the rising cost of living. That’s why my wife and I keep collecting recyclables to make some extra money since our health prevents us from doing regular jobs,” he added.
