Feedback, be it negative or positive, is needed for further improvement. But what happens when constructive criticism is considered too harsh that it’s deemed a humiliation?
Just last night (January 22), a local singing reality TV show, Famili Duo ended its 6th episode but one particular part of the episode is heavily being discussed by fans. Two of the singers, Naim Daniel and Sissy Iman performed their part but unfortunately, their performance was not up to the jury’s expectations, especially Mas Idayu, who is also one of the country’s veteran singers.
Immediately after finishing their performance, Naim and Sissy were questioned by Mas.
“What are you doing? This is already the 6th week! You should’ve chosen the song that best fits you!” Mas screamed at the duo.
She continued to criticise their vocals and said she is among the juries who want to see them succeed because “she loves them so much”.
Naim remained calm but the criticisms were perhaps a little too harsh for Sissy, who teared up on the stage, as revealed by a clip on tv3malaysia’s Instagram post last night.
“You’re not fit to be a jury, Mas Idayu!”
While constructive criticisms are important to identify your flaws, the audience was not a fan of how Mas expressed her judgement. Some of them believed that there is no need for a jury to “scream out” her thoughts, given that it’s a live TV show.
“A professional jury will never scold a person like that on a live TV show. Have you seen other juries doing the same thing? Just admit it if you’re biased. You’re not fit to be a jury, Mas Idayu.”
“At least remind her nicely, you don’t have to yell and embarrass her on a live TV show. Mas Idayu’s voice isn’t really that good, I doubt she can win any competition that she enters. Be strong, Naim and Sissy! Your performance was great!”
“Mas Idayu is the rudest jury. It’s fine if you don’t like it but don’t be rude. You’re not even Malaysia’s number 1.”
“I like their performance! Classic. Mas Idayu, please respect others. I like Ajai’s comment (another jury), he was cool.”
Another netizen questioned how is Mas Idayu’s response a constructive criticism and said, “How do you expect others to understand and improve?”
You can watch the clip below, and tell us if you think Mas Idayu was a little too harsh with her feedback.

At work, we’re no strangers to criticisms too. How do you brace yourself with criticism from your superiors?
