The Batang Kali tragedy has claimed 21 lives as of the time of writing with 12 still missing.
One of the victims, Teh Lynn Xuan who was in a tent on the Zon B hilltop with her mother, talked to BERNAMA about what had happened during the night.
“It happened around 2 am. We heard a loud noise like thunder; it happened 2 times.”
She recalled that during the 2nd time, her tent was upside down and she and her mother managed to crawl out of it. They gathered the people around and went to help those at Zone A.
At around 3am, they called for help but as the signal was bad, they could only keep trying. The BOMBA only arrived at 5am.
Another victim, Leong Jim Meng, 57, told BERNAMA that he felt the campsite shake a little before the loud noise came.
“My family and I were trapped as our tent was buried, but we managed to get out and got to a nearby parking area before calling the authorities,” he said.
A victim by the name of Lee, 28, said that it was drizzling during the time of the incident and he realised there was a landslide after the loud noise.
When he heard that, he went to check and saw the Zone A campsite was buried. He quickly went to help and managed to pull out a woman and her child.
This tragedy is certainly saddening. We hope that the remaining people can be found soon and those who have passed on, may they rest in peace.
