Malaysians couldn’t believe their eyes today after a viral video circulating online depicts another sinkhole allegedly appearing in Kuala Lumpur, specifically at Jalan Sultan Ismail.
The 10-second video was posted by multiple public social media accounts, showing the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulan in the city centre being cordoned off with water flowing from underground.
Furthermore, Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel can also be seen at the scene, though, it’s not exactly a ‘sinkhole’ as what the captions claimed it to be.
The viral ‘sinkhole’ is actually just a burst pipe
The video can be traced to a Reddit post today on the r/Malaysia subreddit with the title, “Yet another sinkhole”.
Well, in reality, the road in the viral video was actually closed off to the public due to a burst pipe, with repair works expected to be completed later tonight.
Earlier today, the KLCCC DBKL Facebook page informed of the burst pipe incident which happened exactly at the spot where the video was recorded.
In a series of updates, KLCCC DBKL also revealed Air Selangor contractors had arrived at the location this morning, with the road being closed off completely to allow for repair works to be done.
In addition, NST quoted Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif as saying that there is a water pipe leak and Air Selangor is currently repairing the issue, dismissing reports of a sinkhole as claimed by the viral posts.
Well, this just goes to show that you can’t believe everything you see online and as the Malay saying goes, “Semak dahulu sebelum kongsi”.
