Malaysia is known to be strict when it comes to elements of LGTBQ+ culture.

But, would you say that Malaysia isn’t safe for LGBTQ+ people?

A UK LGBTQ+ couple that have been travelling across Southeast Asia recently made their stop in Malaysia and has since taken to their TikTok page, @nessieandbecca, to share that to them, it isn’t safe to publicly be an LGBTQ+ couple in our country.

They wrote, “It’s not safe to be publicly LGBTQ+ in Malaysia, sadly. We enjoyed our time in Malaysia but the reality for us was that we had to pretend to be ‘friends’ and avoid any PDA (public displays of affection). Safety is most important to us.”

This video came after a netizen had asked them, “Did you have any problems as a lesbian couple in Malaysia? Or is it a safe country for LGBTQ+ travelers?”

Becca, who is one half of @nessieandbecca, shared her response.

“Malaysia is not a safe country for LGBTQ+ individuals or couples. That’s the reality of it. Basically, Nessie and I pretended to be friends most of the time. As tourists, going to very tourist-y places, we are a lot more safer and for example, Kuala Lumpur is a very cosmopolitan city.”

“However, we didn’t show any PDA, so like holding hands or like, any sort of intimacy while we’re traveling around. So, whenever anybody asked us anything, we were friends, we just, safety is first and the truth is that Malaysia isn’t a safe place for any LGBTQ+ individual,” she said.
