The Swiss chocolate company recently changed the design of their famous bar with smaller triangles to cut costs while maintaining their prices.
This is how they used to look like and how they are now;
According to the Daily Mail, the change is only for the UK-bound chocolates. It is very likely that the change is due to the “BREXIT” or British Exit from the European Union.
Basically they are worried that changes in taxes and regulations will impact their costs to make it so this is done in preparation of that.
OH THE PAIN OF EVEN LOOKING AT IT.
As you can probably imagine, this did not sit well with anyone, even non-Brits who are worried that the change could spread to other countries,
Some of the comments are downright hillarious;
“I have been to funerals less upsetting than this!”
“Utterly ridiculous decision!! Make it shorter or make it more expensive – much more honest”
“You really should of kept the traditional ‘brand’ spacing, what you’ve done is make the product look cheap” [sic]
Many people have compared the new design to “a toothless comb” and a “bicycle stand”, to name a few. This flurry of online hate have been noticed by Toblerone’s owner, Mondelez, who released a public statement not too long ago.
“Like many other companies, we are experiencing higher costs for numerous ingredients.”
“We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on-shelf, is affordable and retains the triangular shape,”
“We have had to reduce the weight of just two of our bars in the UK, from the wider range of available Toblerone products.”
– Mondelez
Mondelez cannot confirm if this new design will be rolled out to other countries in the near future. It is sad, but slightly understandable given the price of cocoa shot to an all-time high after BREXIT.
