As much as it tastes like paradise, how much are you willing to pay for a rare durian?
With the ongoing durian season, exotic fruit lovers are on the hunt for the king of fruits, and some are even ready to pay a high price to satisfy their cravings. You’ve heard of Musang King, Black Thorn, and D24 but some of you may have never heard of the Tupai King, and you MIGHT be surprised to know how pricy it can get.
1 Tupai King durian can go up to RM1,000!
In a Facebook video by Buza Biz, a durian vendor from Penang, Brian Ong said a Tupai King durian typically weighs around 3kgs, and is priced between RM600 and RM1,000, depending on the fruit’s condition and freshness.
But, why 3 to 4 figures just for 1 durian?
Simply put, a Tupai King durian is pretty rare in Malaysia.
“Tupai King durian is not always available in the Malaysian market. The production is also not as much as other durians,” Brian explained.
Also known as D214, Brian shared some tips for all durian enthusiasts on how to identify a real Tupai King, so you won’t get deceived by other durian vendors who sell you a D24 for the price of Tupai King.
“The flesh is mainly yellow with a little bit of green, and is full of fat. The aroma is as thick as Musang King, but this is a little bitter.”
In Penang, the Tupai King was officially registered in February 2024 as another variant of durian, and it is expected to “fight off” the Musang King’s popularity.
To the exotic fruits enthusiasts, are you ready (and willing) to spend big bucks on Tupai King for an experience?
