One man’s trash could literally be the source of food for an entire family.
Poverty has put this family in Kelantan through really hard times. Siti Hamidah Abdul Hamid’s (age 32) family depend solely on her husband’s income to cover their expenses, reported Bernama.
Due to their financial struggles, her family consumes chicken skins that are discarded as some of their meals. Siti’s husband, Muhamad Zuhaidi Safin (age 33), works as a labourer and his income doesn’t provide any room for their family to live “luxuriously”.
Siti said that even though a lot of people don’t really like chicken skin, it’s her family’s favourite dish.
“I get the chicken skin from a canteen at a nearby school. I think that throwing away the skin is such a waste,” Siti said.
“My family can’t afford to eat beef, chicken or fish every day. Thankfully, there are people who are willing to provide the chicken skin for my family,” she added.
Siti explains that some people might think that the chicken skin is unhealthy, but her family has no other choice because of their financial difficulties.
“All my three daughters, Siti Aisyah (age 8), Norsyayidah Nafisah (age 6) and Nor Syafiya Nadira (age 3), enjoy eating the chicken skin since two years ago,” she added.
Muhamad Zuhaidi said that his salary is not fixed, and he has to pay rent for their house. The rent is about RM100 a month, even though the house is old.
“The most important thing is that my family is fed and we are healthy,” he said. He wishes for his family to own a house one day.
Siti and her family’s hardships remind us to be grateful for the things we have in our lives. We should take a moment to fully realise how fortunate we are, when compared to so many unfortunate people all around the world.
It is hoped that Siti and her family will be able to strive through their difficult financial situation soon and hopefully, one day live in their own house.
