Malaysians with a valid driving license and MyKad have the luxury of purchasing RON95 at the subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre. Many, however, are not happy with the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) system, which doesn’t allow those without a valid vehicle license to purchase the fuel.

In a viral Threads post, a Malaysian secondary school teacher shared the dilemma he heard at school.

Paying more due to the lack of a motorbike license

Many students, who ride motorcycles to school, are not happy that they have to pay the unsubsidised price of RM2.60 per litre for RON95 because they don’t have a motorbike license.

“No wonder so many people are upset with BUDI95. These include students who ride motorcycles, but do not possess a motorcycle license.”

The teacher also claimed that many of the students came in modified motorcycles, in which they allegedly spent hundreds of ringgit on the modification, which baffled the teacher.

“Imagine losing more than RM2 every time they refill their Honda Wave if they don’t qualify for BUDI95. They can afford to modify their bikes, but not to spend on petrol.”

Only 34 complaints have been received about BUDI95 so far

According to the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN), Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, only 34 complaints over issues or system disruptions in the redemption process have been lodged since the roll-out of the BUDI95 fuel subsidy programme, as of 8 October.

In a statement, she said the disruptions were caused by several factors, including temporary system glitches and system downtime. She also reminded that when the system is down, users can go inside the petrol station and use the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) terminal at the counter to verify their eligibility.
