Who can forget the heartbreaking video where a straw was stuck in a turtle’s nose?

As people are becoming more and more environmentally conscious, more straw options are popping out. As of now, there are paper straws, bamboo straws, metal straws, and… edible straws?!

This Penang company has made an environmentally-friendly, edible straw for the masses, reported The Star!

The straws are made from natural ingredients (rice and tapioca) without the use of any additives and it is said to be tasteless so it won’t affect the flavour of whatever you’re drinking.

Ricestraws IT director Anddrew Loh said,

“The bottom part when immersed in drinks will taste a bit starchy while the upper section will be crispy like chips.”

The company also said that the straws will decompose completely in 90 days and the straws can actually be turned into animal feed or fertilisers.

He added,

“The straws can last for two to five hours in hot water and about five to 10 hours in cold water.”

To reduce the cost and make their product cheaper, the company uses broken rice (rice that is not in perfect shape, usually used to make mihun). They make the straws in 3 sizes and the biggest size is for all the boba lovers out there! The company also mentioned that they will be looking into producing more cups, bowls, stirrers, etc using the same ingredients.
