Education is essential for children, and access to it is a basic need.
The Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication and ADUN of Sebuyau, Julaihi Narawi, recently revealed that a school located in Sarawak, SMK Sebuyau, needed to conduct its classes under canopies.
According to ADUN’s Facebook post, these canopies are needed as some school buildings cannot be used anymore.
“The canopies are needed by the school to allow teachers and students to have activities as some buildings and halls cannot be used any longer.”
“This space under the canopies is much needed as it serves its temporary function while waiting for the school to be reconstructed soon,” he elaborated.
It is said that SMK Sebuyau is one of the dilapidated schools in Sarawak. A new SMK Sebuyau will be built on a site that has been readied for a long time in the new township of Sebuyau.
The Sarawak minister added that this school is dilapidated but still hosts about 1,000 students.
“It’s heartbreaking to see teachers and students under these conditions when their peers elsewhere have better access to things.”
He noted that the goal is still the same: to get good grades. SMK Sebuyau achieved that with better SPM results in 2023, even under these conditions.
The school’s Facebook page shows that some classes are still being conducted indoors while others are outdoors.
It is saddening that this is still happening. We hope that the reconstruction will start and finish quickly.
