Times are tough and Malaysians are finding more ways to survive!

More Malaysian university students are becoming “sugar babies” due to the increasing Covid-19 cases and tightening SOPs for the Movement Control Order. According to Sugarbook, Asia’s largest sugar daddy dating platform, a shocking 40 per cent spike was observed in sign-ups amongst students from January 2021.

These figures demonstrate the financial desperation students have been experiencing. Since the implementation of MCO 1.0 last year March, public and private universities were forced to close down and students resorted to online learning. Despite the new system, university tuition fees remained the same which proved to be one of the most challenging expenses for most families.

Darren Chan, Founder, and CEO of Sugarbook said through sugar dating, the students not only get monetary gifts, but they also get to pursue career advancements by connecting with high-net-worth individuals.

“Times are hard. Our platform provides the opportunity to find economic relief during these volatile times. Dating someone who is more successful or experienced comes with its perks.”

He added that with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the average sugar baby gets up to RM2,500 in monthly allowances which is a great help to struggling university students, especially during these trying times.

Surprisingly, the top three positions for universities with the most recorded sugar babies are taken by prominent universities in Subang. Topping the list is a university that recorded 3,105 student sign-ups followed by  2,624 sign-ups and at third place is a university in Subang Jaya with 1,696 sign-ups. There were 1,280 sign-ups from students at a public university in Kuala Lumpur.
