A public disturbance broke out in Kuala Terengganu after Selangor FC fans were seen marching across the city’s iconic Drawbridge, waving team flags and lighting flares while obstructing traffic.

The incident, which happened on 1 February (Sunday), sparked widespread condemnation and led to the arrest of 33 individuals. They were among around 400 supporters detained at the District Police Headquarters (IPD) for urine screenings.

Selangor Ruler calls for maximum penalties and match bans for those found guilty

Of the 33 people arrested, 21 tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) during the screenings.

In response, Selangor Football Club (Selangor FC) has issued a statement expressing its disapproval of the incident, strongly condemning any behaviour that breaks the law or threatens public safety.

The viral incident also caught the attention of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and His Majesty expressed disappointment over what happened.

In a statement, His Royal Highness voiced strong disapproval of the alleged fans’ actions and called on the police to identify those behind the incident.

“His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, as Patron of Selangor FC, expressed deep sorrow and disappointment over the incident and strongly disapproves of immoral activities such as hooliganism and gangsterism, which are increasingly spreading among local football supporters, particularly those wearing Selangor FC jerseys,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Ruler stressed that those involved must be punished to the fullest extent of the law and suggested that Selangor FC supporters who are convicted should be banned from entering stadiums for any matches involving the team.

“His Royal Highness has called on the police to identify the masterminds behind the incident and emphasised that anyone found guilty must face the full force of the law. This is meant to serve as a warning to other Selangor FC supporters so that similar incidents do not happen again, and urge all the supporters to always exercise self-control and to protect the good name of the team and the state.”
