The Johor State Religious Department (JAINJ) recently paid a visit to one of the luxury condominiums in the state following a public tip-off.
A couple in their 30s, who admitted to being unmarried, was caught for Khalwat at the studio apartment in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, at around 12:30 AM.

JAINJ spokesperson revealed that after weeks of undercover work, the agency noticed that many unmarried couples are choosing luxury condominiums to spend the night, which is not permissible for unmarried Muslim couples. It’s not difficult for the couple to rent themselves a unit, as they can opt to reserve online without having to meet the landlord to obtain the keys.

After 5 minutes of knocking, a man opened the door, and JAINJ officers noticed that someone else was in the bathroom, to which the man said was “his friend”, without specifying the gender. The woman in the bathroom, later revealed to be the man’s girlfriend, came out, and the couple was interrogated.
The man, who is from the state, met with the woman, who came from another state, at his house, before the pair drove over 30 KM to the homestay. They checked into the room at around 11 PM, less than two hours before JAINJ officers came knocking.
“They had dinner and strolled around the city before checking into the room.”

When asked if they had plans to tie the knot, the couple said yes, but they are currently putting the plan on hold due to financial constraints. One of the officers then advised them to stop spending on homestays and save the money instead so they can get married as soon as possible to avoid immoral activities.
In its post, JAINJ spokesperson said the couple was caught under Section 27 of the Syariah Criminal Enactment 1995.
