With the flood worsening in states like Kelantan and Terengganu, many wonder about the fate of the flood victims struggling to survive.
The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, stated that there is no need to declare a state of emergency following the severe flooding that affected several Peninsular Malaysia states, including Kelantan and Terengganu.
“All rescue agencies are still able to handle the situation effectively,” Anwar told the media.
He made this statement after visiting the flood victims at the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan, Kampung Telaga Papan, here, which is housing 269 victims, earlier today (December 1), reported Astro Awani.
Anwar also said the government has allocated RM75 million of financial aid to the victims in those 2 states, an additional RM25 million after the initial RM50 million aid was announced.
In addition, he also announced that the Federal Government has agreed to provide a special financial aid of RM500 to each state civil servant in Terengganu. This involves more than 14,000 state civil servants, with a total allocation of RM7.4 million to be distributed to the state government.
According to statistics from the Malaysian Department of Social Welfare, the number of flood victims across the country has increased to 149,073, with 693 temporary evacuation centers (PPS) opened for them.
As of 2 pm today (December 1), 95,841 flood victims had been recorded in Kelantan, with 39,991 victims in Terengganu.
