Guys, this is why we can’t have have nice things. Sigh.
What started out as a kind and generous act to the community has now been ruined by selfish people. Remember a few months ago when a community fridge was placed in Butterworth near a Hainanese chicken rice shop and Layer Gene cafe?
After only four months, both the benefactors have decided to shelve the idea as society has once again proven that our mentality is still not ready for such awesome kindnesses. According to Chinapress, the fridge, known as ‘Love & Hope Port’ was set up on May 23 in order to provide the homeless with easy access to food and water so that they won’t suffer hunger and thirst.
The owner of the chicken rice restaurant paid for the RM120 rental of the industrial fridge while Layer Gene cafe paid for the electrical bill to run the fridge. Wu Ri Jai, who is in charge of the fridge, would check it daily to make sure it is well-stocked. The public was also encouraged to donate food to the fridge as an act of charity.
However, Sinchew reported that the charitable act has gone awry in July, after it was discovered that greedy people were taking all the food inside the fridge. They even took large plastic bags to store all the stolen food, which could’ve instead fed at least a hundred people. How inconsiderate!
Their excuse for sapu-ing all the food? They said that they wanted to bring the food back to share with their neighbours. Eh, the food is for the homeless and needy, not for you to throw a party with your neighbours you know!
Having no choice, the two young benefactors decided to lock up the fridge and changed the opening hours of 8.30am to 11.00pm, to 9.00am to 5.00pm. They still gave food to the needy but they would need to request access from the person in charge first.
However, the fridge has now been destroyed recently by some heartless people as the glass doors are broken and damaged. It is believed that the incident happened at night at around 4am when the fridge was locked and it appears that some imbeciles tried to break the doors.
Hence, the disappointed donors have decided to stop this community fridge for now and returned the fridge to the owner. Luckily, the owner understood that it was for charity and told them not to worry about the damage done to the fridge. Now, that’s kindness!
The staff said, “Someone tried to donate a whole box of food but when he arrived we could only inform him that the fridge was spoilt so he had no choice but to take the food home. We thought that such a compassionate idea could work in Malaysia but we were sorely mistaken. Guess our mentality still has to be improved.”
Seriously people, where is the love?
