The bus driver involved in the freak accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students has since come forward to apologise and share his side of the story.
The 39-year-old who’s been driving buses since 2016 claimed the bus was fine until it reached the elephant crossing bridge in Gerik, when the brakes suddenly gave out.

The bus driver has 18 summonses on record
In a recent update, police confirmed that the bus driver had previously racked up 18 traffic summonses, according to Harian Metro.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 13 of the summonses were for speeding, one was for an accident, three were for not wearing a seatbelt, and one was for not having a third brake light.
He also said none of the 18 summonses have been settled. In addition, investigations also revealed that the bus itself had 21 traffic summonses on record.

“We will investigate from all angles”
Yesterday, reports revealed that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will be setting up a special task force to investigate the UPSI chartered bus crash on the JRTB.
Mohd Yusri said the task force will include PDRM, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), and other relevant agencies, all working together for a full investigation.
“We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible so that we can charge the (bus) driver in court. We will investigate from all angles including his offence record, background, activities, and previous employment, we’ll look into everything,” he said.
