With streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, iFlix, and others available for audiences to watch from the comfort of their homes, do you think we need more streaming services for more options?

If you’re expecting at least one more platform to choose from, here’s good news for streaming enthusiasts! According to the mayor of Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said that Ipoh will soon launch its streaming platform, and yes, very much like Netflix. How soon?

Rumaizi is expecting the streaming application to be launched sometime THIS YEAR.

The idea will be brought to life with the collaboration of a filmmaking company owned by Afdlin Shauki, a Malaysian actor and comedian.

“We aim to boost this creative industry in Ipoh as a new economic revenue source. I want to create something like Netflix. It will be a digital TV format because this is the future of the industry.”

Rumaizi added that there will be 7 sections in the application, including a section for merchandise sales.

Now, what genre of movies can audiences expect to see? As of now, the content is still being considered.

“We are still discussing the concept of the application, including the type of movies.”

The mayor, however, hinted at 1 of the possible content of the application – Bollywood.

“I’ve always envisioned Ipoh becoming like Bollywood, considering the  thriving creative industry there.”

RM1 for a movie?

Unlike Netflix or most streaming platforms that charge users monthly, Rumaizi said the Ipoh-born application will charge users based on the type of content watched. A pay-per-movie concept.

“The concept we want to introduce is, for instance, paying RM1 for one movie.”

This could be a cue for more incoming local productions to be placed under the same roof – the application made in Ipoh. What do you think of the idea of the Ipoh-made streaming platform?
