New year, new speed trap?
Transport Minister Anthony Loke just revealed in a press conference that the old speed trap system is being swapped out for a new point-to-point system that’ll make catching speeders even easier.
“We’ll track from point A to point B”
During the press conference, Loke shared plans to catch more speeders using a point-to-point system as part of upgrades to the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) cameras.
He explained that this system is meant to stop drivers from just slowing down in front of the cameras. Instead, they’ll have to keep their speed in check over a set distance.
“For example, between point A and point B, we’ll track how long it takes drivers to get there. If they finish the trip faster than expected, it means they were speeding, and they’ll face penalties,” he said.
The system is set to roll out by 3rd quarter of 2025!
Loke said the system will first be introduced in dangerous and high-risk spots, like the hilly Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway near Genting Sempah and the Menora Tunnel in Ipoh.
He also shared that Malaysia plans to roll out the high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) camera system by September to keep tabs on overloaded vehicles and help prevent deadly crashes, according to the New Straits Times.
10 cameras will be installed in areas with heavy traffic and frequent accidents, with the system expected to be up and running by the third quarter of 2025.
