Adeline Chang pleaded guilty to the charge of misusing the Internet, and the Sepang Sessions Court fined her RM7,000, as well as confiscated her mobile phone.
According to the charge, Adeline was accused of uploading an obscene picture of a minor with inappropriate remarks on May 30, 2024, which is a direct violation of Section 233(1)(a) – improper use of the Internet of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, reported Sin Chew.
The maximum penalty for this section is RM50,000 and a jail term of not more than 1 year.
Adeline’s defence lawyer told the court that she is the eldest daughter at home with no fixed job, and earns only RM1,000 to RM2,000 a month by writing reviews online. The lawyer also revealed that Adeline, who is 24 this year is suffering from a thyroid disease, and is currently going through treatment.
“The surgery had to be postponed due to financial constraint.”
The lawyer also requested the fines to be reduced, given that this is Adeline’s 1st offence.
The chief prosecutor, on the other hand, asked the court for an appropriate punishment as Adeline’s behaviour is equivalent to cyberbullying and could harm others.
After listening to statements from both parties, the Judge decided to fine Adeline for RM7,000, and 6 months of imprisonment should she fail to pay the fine.
“My sister has a tumour, please help us”
Following Adeline’s verdict, her sister, Alice took the opportunity to share a story with the media outside the court.
“My sister has a tumour, and it’s growing. The doctor has advised her to go for a surgery as soon as possible, but she needs RM35,000 for the surgery.”
Alice also claims that her “Dato Seri lover” wanted to bear the cost of the surgery, which Adeline rejected because she didn’t want to owe him anything.
“Adeline believes that if she was helped financially, the other person and her might become enemies in the future. But, I hope the public can help us. My sister’s tumor is growing bigger,” Alice said.
