Before returning to Kuala Lumpur, local singer Namewee, who is embroiled in the murder of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, was in Johor Bahru, Johor, while the world, including the police, thought he had gone into hiding.

With the company of his friends and lawyer, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, surrendered to the Dang Wangi Police Station at 1:10 AM.

Namewee has surrendered to the police

In his statement today (5 November), Namewee claimed that he had told the police earlier about his arrival time at the police station, and said that he will do his best to assist with the investigation before explaining the matter to the public when the time comes.

“I will explain to everyone, including the family members of Iris, after this.”

Namewee also posted a short clip of him standing outside the Dang Wangi Police station.

“I didn’t run, and I will never”

In the statement that he penned before surrendering to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Namewee clarified that he will not run away and will cooperate with the authorities, just like he did in the past.

“Of all the seven times I was wanted by the police in the past, I never ran away. I surrendered myself to the police every single time.”

In reports by China Press and Sin Chew, Namewee’s lawyer and friends left the police station about an hour later. When asked for comments, his lawyer simply remarked, “Namewee is safe.”

Assistant Commissioner Sazalee bin Hj. Adam, Dang Wangi District Police Chief, said that Namewee will be remanded for investigation. The singer will be brought to the court this morning for a remand application, and he is expected to be under police custody for seven days to assist with the investigation, which is conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Namewee was arrested by PDRM on 22 October after the police found ecstasy pills on him inside the hotel room where Iris was found dead. Namewee tested positive for four drugs, but pleaded not guilty to two drug charges, and is expected to go for a hearing on 18 December.
