This year, we’re finally about to celebrate Chinese New Year without MCO (but remember to follow SOPs to keep your loved ones safe okay)! While many are super excited to balik kampung, we’ve also heard some complaints from fellow Malaysians who have big families. Today, we asked Malaysians to share the struggles of celebrating the festive season with a big family and how to overcome them. Let’s find out what they have to say!
1. Not enough bathrooms
“Housing a family of 20 during the festive season can be fun, but definitely not in the mornings and evenings, when everyone is scrambling for those three bathrooms! ? When it’s finally my turn to take a shower, I’m already super hungry.” -Lee, 25.
The best way to solve this problem is to take your shower during “non-peak” hours. Communicate with your relatives and allocate a fixed timing for each other’s bath. Other than taking your own sweet time showering, you’ll also get to reduce the bathroom queues at home.
2. Disturbed sleep
“Whenever my relatives visit, I’m forced to share my already small bedroom with my cousins and siblings. This is when my beauty sleep is disturbed by loud snores, frequent door movements, and late-night chats… ugh!” -Ting, 21.
So, to ensure better sleep quality, early and light sleepers should be allocated one room. The night owls, on the other hand, can share a room or even reside in the living room, where they can have access to overnight essentials like TV, snacks, and beverages. Be sure to lower the volume when it’s late at night!
3. Countless “kepoh” questions
“For each family I visit during Chinese New Year, I’m bound to hear “kepoh” questions like ‘Got boyfriend/girlfriend already ah?’ or ‘When do you wanna get married?’. Annoying lah!” -Jason, 28.
While these “kepoh” questions are indications of care and good intentions, it’s about time we share our true opinions regarding these questions. Let your relatives know that while marriage is a wonderful milestone, it is not the only definition of success in life. After all, being happy and healthy is what’s most important, right?
4. A LOT of noise
“Imagine sitting at the sofa trying to watch TV while your cousins scroll through TikTok at a deafening volume. Then suddenly, your aunts begin to gossip enthusiastically and your little niece starts playing ‘pop pop’… This happens to me every CNY!” -Chin, 23.
Family members who love chit-chatting should remain in the dining area so that those who want to watch TV can do so in the living room. Besides, you can also invite your cousins to watch their favourite shows on TV or even play board games together so that all of you can engage in fun bonding activities.
5. Endless chores
“While we enjoy spending time with friends and relatives, we’re often left with TONS of dishes to wash after their visitations. So we spent most of the time doing the chores instead of spending time with our loved ones during the festive season.” -Alice, 26.
So if you find yourself buried in chores, feel free to ask for help, especially from your cousins! Besides being able to escape the “kepoh” aunties, we might even get a bigger ang pow for helping out with the chores! Alternatively, if you’re visiting your relatives, be sure to help them with household chores to lighten their burdens too!
6. Tedious meal preparation
“Preparing meals for a big family is a tiring chore. Think about the number of ingredients we need to prepare, not to mention the number of woks, cutleries, and dishes we have to wash!” -Cheong, 29.
To save us the hassle of cooking, we can tapao meals for our families instead! However, it is important to ensure that the meals we order suit our relatives’ tastebuds. Does anyone have allergies? Are there relatives who dislike spicy food? These are all factors to consider before we tapao our meals.
Even after noting down our relatives’ dietary preferences, it can be difficult to find meals that satisfy everyone’s taste buds. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In fact, we’ve recently discovered a super tasty dish that every family member would love…
