Driving safely and responsibly is not the only thing that you need to keep in mind when you’re on the road. There are certain rules & regulations set by JPJ that you’re also expected to follow.
Recently, the Facebook page Automotive Tempatan shared an image of a fellow JPJ officer conducting an inspection on the wheels of a 4X4 Hilux. The caption of the Facebook post “reminds” the JPJ officer that the measurements are all stated at the side of the wheel.
However, Malaysians have a lot to say about the image, especially about the officer’s decision to manually measure the width of the tyre. The comment section has since been filled with jokes about the action of the JPJ officer.
“Just like what Samy Vellu once said, this is what the crazy ones do.”
“Apparently, JPJ officers are not all smart.”
“Poor officer. Wasted efforts and time.”
“Regardless of how many of the rules that you have followed, they’ll still find your mistakes.”
“He’s trying to see if the tyre is proper for the potholes-filled roads of Malaysia.”
“He’s been staying behind the empty counter for a long time. So this is what happened when he’s out on the field.”
According to Carlist.my, the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959 & the Motor Vehicles (Construction, Equipment and Use) Rules 1988 have set that bigger rims or wider tyres must be completely covered by mudguards or mudflaps.
This basically means no protrusion out of the body is allowed. So, this probably explains the reason why the JPJ officer bent down and measured the tyre.
Regardless, do make sure that the whole parts of your vehicle have adhered to the rules set by JPJ. You might want to check the rules and regulations before proceeding with any untoward modifications!
