The Airport Authority of Thailand has announced that it is implementing automated biometric identification at 6 airports in the country, which will utilise facial recognition technology.
Its director, Kirati Kitmanawat, asserted that the system would be ready for domestic passengers on 1 November, while international passengers can expect to begin using the system just a month later on 1 December.
Thailand is set to roll out an automated biometric identification system at 6 airports
According to the Thai-based publication Bangkok Post, the 6 airports that will use the new system are:
- Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok
- Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok
- Chiang Mai International Airport, Chiang Mai
- Mae Fah Luang International Airport, Chiang Rai
- Phuket International Airport, Phuket
- Hat Yai International Airport, Songkhla
Furthermore, in order to use the system, passengers are required to allow access to their identification information when checking in at the counter or self-service check-in at the aforementioned airports.
The system will then collect passengers’ biometric information and travel itineraries electronically, allowing them to go from the baggage drop to the boarding gate without showing passports and boarding passes. Do note that each registration is for only one journey, though.
Moreover, according to the Times of India, passengers can also use the web check-in option and use the barcode on their boarding card.
To do so, you need to choose the airline on the check-in page, select enrollment, scan the boarding pass and add ID and facial scans.
