During these election seasons, many would attempt all kinds of tactics and distractions to pull in votes for their own parties while disparage their competition.

An example of this is a pro-LGBTQ protest that was held in front of Sogo, Kuala Lumpur.

Content creator, Salim Iskandar, took to his Twitter account to showcase the protest and to condemn it.

He wrote, “Which country is this in? They are getting braver, yeah? Is this at Sogo? That’s a historical site.”

Many were quick to take to the post to point out that the demonstration was not being done by actual members of the LGBTQ community and believe the protesters were paid to carry out the act as a political move.

“If you take a look at their faces, none of them have LGBTQ features. All of their faces just look like you, Salim. How much did you pay these ice truck boys? If you paid them about RM500 to admit that they are gay, it’s not worth it.”

“They don’t seem like LGBTQ (people), how much do you think they were paid to do this provocation?”

“Have you never seen LGBTQ people doing demonstrations? They’re full of colours and not like this, demonstrating like they are asking for chicken price reductions. Obviously they got paid to do this stunt by some political party.”

It turns out that the demonstrators are neither paid actors nor members of the LGBTQ community.

According to a report by Harian Metro, 8 men were arrested for participating in the demonstration in front of the Sogo shopping center in Kuala Lumpur, last Saturday (July 29).

“The suspects who joined the rally said that LGBTQ rights in Malaysia are blocked, they chanted ‘down with sharia court’ while holding banners.”

“The result of the investigation found that these are members of The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, and most of those arrested have joined the group for almost 2 years,” shared Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
