A recent anonymous confession revealed that a Malaysian may have just gone the extra mile just for the sake of savings. According to an anonymous post on the Facebook page Ricebowl铁饭网-解决您的求职难题, the man revealed that he has been working for about a year and a half, with a monthly wage of RM3,000.
“After the deduction of EPF and SOCSO, I have around RM2,650 left.”
He revealed that at times, he feels like he is torturing himself to come up with more savings, only for him to eventually feel like the amount of savings is nowhere near enough. Not only that but he has been taking ‘keen steps’ just to save more. Here’s what he has been doing:
- Going out only once or twice a month (less than RM100 in expenses)
- No skincare products, and has been using the same pack of toothpaste for more than 2 years.
- Using housemate’s shampoo.
- Using his 5-year-old laptop, which suffers from major lagging issues.
- Leaving the battery of his bedroom lights unchanged, and simply readjusting the battery.
That’s one tough commitment and we’re not even sure if we can be that persistent ourselves. And for these, he manages to save an amount of RM500 every month. Still, the amount does not sit well with him.
“Is RM500 even enough? You can only pay for the down payment of a house 10 years later,” he added.
His post has gained the attention of fellow Malaysians, who are mostly puzzled by how persistent he is in “torturing” himself. Some users have pointed out his toothpaste usage, as well as the shampoo that doesn’t belong to him.
“Does your housemate know that you’re using his shampoo? If he does, he’s an angel. Or else, you’re in trouble. Also, how did you use the same pack of toothpaste for 2 years in a row? Just (by using) a bit in the morning and, do you even brush your teeth at night?”
“Same pack of toothpaste for 2 years. Make a video out of it, you’ll earn some side income,” suggested another netizen.
A user has also questioned if he only brushes his teeth once a week.
“I’m curious how, did you spend the remaining RM2150 – did it go towards your rent?”
“Forget about the toothpaste. Did you steal your housemate’s shampoo?”
Another user believed that a monthly saving of RM500 is considered pretty good, while others said that regardless of the amount saved, it will never be enough.
How much do you manage to save every month? Do you find yourself as persistent as the anonymous man when it comes to saving costs?
