A loan/rental is often an option people go for when they can’t afford to pay a lump sump purchasing amount for something they want. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s always wise to trace your cash flow, and figure out your wants and needs.
Just recently, a former Malaysian recovery officer (debt collector), Sya shared a story on her TikTok @syafiqahumaira about a client of hers who used his mother’s name to rent a water filter. It wouldn’t have been an issue but in this case, the client’s mother knew nothing about her name being used.
Sya shared that this “water filter” incident will always stay “engraved” in her mind. Sya gave the woman a call and her response was just heartbreaking.
“I’m not living with my son. I haven’t seen him in quite awhile, and I have never used any water filter. When I have money, can I pay you back slowly?”
The woman didn’t even have the slightest idea that her son used her name.
Sya said she cried thinking about the fate of the woman. It was Sya’s 1st job and she was new in the industry but above all, it was tough for her to collect debt from an elderly.
“I felt sorry for the makcik but at the same time, I had KPI to chase.”
Sya also said that her manager had reminded her countlessly about being more aggressive when it comes to reminding clients about their debt.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Sya said that it was her 1st job after fresh out of college, and she did not want to be selective at that time as she just wanted to gain experience. She also admitted that not long after the conversation with Mak Cik, Sya resigned from the place because she didn’t have what it takes to be a debt collector.
“I was so sad after hearing the Mak Cik’s voice. I couldn’t take it, so I resigned not long after that.”
When asked about the client who used his mother’s name, Sya told WORLD OF BUZZ that he has yet to settle the loan.
Applying for a loan, regardless of your reasons is fine as long as you don’t lose track of your cash flow, and as long as you can afford to pay it off. We’re sure that many of us can’t wait for the day when we’re officially debt-free!
