In a recent video that’s been gaining attention online, @qushayry11 shared a troubling incident involving his mom at a Habib jewellery store located in a Petaling Jaya mall.
In the video, Qush explains how his mom was allegedly scammed by a staff member at the store, who tricked her into paying more than the amount indicated on her receipt.
She wanted to trade in an old bracelet and upgrade to a new one
Qush shared that his mom visited the jewellery store on August 9th (Friday) in Petaling Jaya to trade in an old gold bracelet she had received from him and his siblings and to upgrade to a new one.
He explained that a sales advisor at the store informed his mom that the old bracelet was worth over RM3.8K, noting that its value had increased over the years.
“The sales advisor didn’t provide my mom with the current price per gram of gold for that day. While gold values generally rise over time, the advisor only mentioned the total value of the old bracelet which is over RM3.8K and the amount she needed to pay which is RM2K for the new one, without giving a clear breakdown of the current gold price.”
She was informed that she had purchased both a new bracelet and a ring
Qush explained that his mom immediately paid and transferred RM2,000 as requested by the sales advisor. After returning home, she decided to review the receipt and was surprised to see that she should have only paid over RM1,100, not RM2,000.
Confused by the discrepancy, she called customer service. The representative informed her that their records showed that she had made 2 purchases that day: a bracelet and a ring.
“Even after customer service clarified that my mom had supposedly purchased both a new bracelet and a ring, the receipt only listed the new bracelet and did not mention the ring.”
Upon hearing this, Qush, his mom, and his siblings decided to visit the jewellery store to get clarification.
There were 3 receipts involved
At the store, Qush and his family sought answers from the staff who assisted his mom. They wanted to understand why the receipt only showed a payment of over RM1,100 and why they were informed that she had bought a ring.
“We discovered that there were actually 3 receipts involved. The receipt given to my mom only covered the new gold bracelet she purchased, while the 2nd receipt for the trade-in of the old bracelet was never provided. The 3rd receipt, which claimed my mom bought a ring for over RM700, was incorrect. In reality, my mom only bought the new bracelet.”
The sales advisor mentioned that the ring was supposedly purchased by a different customer before Qush’s mom. However, the timing didn’t add up as his mom’s purchase was recorded at 4:31 pm, while the ring’s invoice showed a purchase time of 4:32 pm, which was after his mom’s transaction.
“Hopefully, this video will help raise awareness among all mothers, aunts, and even children about the importance of staying alert when buying jewelry. Always remember to carefully check your receipt after making a purchase to avoid any issues.”
“We sincerely apologise for this incident”
Just 2 days ago, Habib issued an apology regarding the incident involving Qush’s mom. In their post, they also revealed that action had been taken against the sales advisor responsible.
They reassured customers that this incident does not reflect their strong commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in their business practices.
“We have promptly addressed the customer’s complaint and resolved the issue. The sales advisor involved has been placed on administrative leave while we conduct an internal investigation to ensure a fair and impartial review of the incident,” the store stated.
