Graduation is one of the most important highlights but does it have to be celebrated lavishly, especially for students at school when it involves additional fees?
Malaysian actress, Adrea Abdul recently shared on her TikTok post @adreaabdul and highlighted one of the many frustrations that parents have to go through – forking out money for their children’s graduation. Those with kids will be aware that these fees are NOT cheap.
“I could’ve accepted it if it was only RM15 or RM20 but this is RM200 we’re talking about, not including the parents!”
According to Adrea, if parents decide to tag along, it would’ve been an additional RM150 per person, which makes it RM300 for both parents to attend.
“So, for a kid and his parents to attend, it will be RM500!”
Adrea said this is “absolutely unnecessary”, and added that some parents are even pressured when they are alerted in the WhatsApp group about the outstanding payment.
“What would others say if the kid attended without their parents?”
“For trend? For social media?”
In her lengthy clip, Adrea also expressed her irritation about the need to host a graduation ceremony for students at hotels, as if it’s an attempt to make the school look prestigious.
She highlighted that not all parents are wealthy or can afford to pay such high amounts, especially those with many kids and commitments.
“Do you really expect the parents to pay RM2,500 if they have 5 kids? This is unnecessary and it’s an emotional blackmail!”
Adrea also said that it would be wise for school principals to at least discuss with the parents before deciding on the graduation venues, and urged the Ministry of Education to look into the matter.
“I think MoE needs to take immediate action because it is unreasonable for the school to force parents to pay extra fees to attend the dinner graduation.”
You can listen to everything Adrea had to say about the matter in the clip below.
@adreaabdul Tak masuk akal! Seriously tidak adil! Korang setuju atau tidak untuk sekolah rendah & menengah adakan graduation lunch or dinner di hotel 4,5 star dan kenekan bayaran 150-200 setiap pelajar! Gile lah! #kementerianpendidikanmalaysia #trending #tren #celotehadrea #karut #takmasukakal #tidakadil
Dear parents, are you facing a similar challenge on this issue? Do you think it’s wise to host a graduation dinner for children at fancy settings, or it should’ve just been at the school hall itself?
